Another pro-female post!

Yikes! That’s scary – two in a very short time from me. I’ll have to post another about men being good too (not that either this post or the poem are anti-male – just pro-female).

Anyways – I’d been looking for this article a while ago. It’s about the value of being a SAHM (stay-at-home-mum) – a whopping $138,646 – to be chauffeur, psychologist, teacher, etc. Not too shabby I must say.

I must point out that there are people who disagree with the math. And this one guy has a fair point. It’s an abstract calculation and not based in “reality”. But I think it is important not to take for granted the benefits of a stay-at-home parent.

Maybe a better calculation would look at the simple savings on not sending your child to day care. Here in Halton it’s $245/week. In Vancouver, it can be $325+. That is a savings of $12740 – 16900. That’s a lot when you take into consideration the amount you’d have to work in order to pay for that childcare. Say I was earning $30K a year. Take of 1/3 in taxes – that leaves $20000 – which would mean I’d only be bringing home $250-580 a month after childcare expenses are taken care of – doesn’t really seem worth it!

I understand there are situations where it’s necessary to work when you have a baby – but if it’s a matter of choice and not necessity, do the math and decide if it’s really worth it.
