Finished!

Well at least I hope so! Today I posted my last assignments to Regent for my Masters. So all that is required is to get my marks and walk at graduation.

Its been 3 years and 8 months of work but its done. I was saying to Jen yesterday that I wish I could actually go into the college to hand in my papers – it would seem more fitting and more final. Well what ever way they are submitted they are now done!!!

He’s a porker!

We had our one month doctor’s visit (the last one before the onslaught of vaccinations!) this morning and WOW is all I can say.

When he was born, Luke weighed 6 lbs 13 oz, and was 20 inches long. In 4 1/2 short weeks, he has grown to 8 lbs 14 oz, and is now 21 1/2 inches long! He’s growing at the right rate for his starting size (he’s in the 25th percentile), and the doctor was very impressed with how alert he is for his age!  Seems like his feeding is going okay! Now for some photos:

That’s Luke with his new bunny from Grandpa. Here’s Luke in his bouncy chair. Pop him in it when he’s fussy, put on the vibrating chair action and you’ve got either a content baby or one that’s asleep (win-win!)

And here’s a belated post of Uncle Julian holding his little nephew:

Luke hits the bottle!

Two posts in one day! I was writing the other one while Tim was feeding Luke. We decided to get a pump (highly recommend it!) so that periodically I’ll be able to go longer than 3 hours without feeling like I belong at a dairy farm.

This afternoon Tim tried it out. Luke loved it! Here’s the evidence:

I’d say it makes me feel replaceable except that I’m the source of the food still, though now I don’t always have to be “on call”. Luke’s been taking to everything -  dummys (soothers) – but not too much – he’s happy to spit it out when he goes to sleep, his toys (play mat, bouncy chair, etc.), and now bottle feeding. We’ll see if he still likes the “real thing” in another couple hours when he’s due another feeding.

Luke’s new toy

Before showing Luke “in action” with his new toy, I thought I’d post a picture of when we tried to weigh Luke on the kitchen scale. Since it goes up to 21 lbs we thought it’d be okay, but since he’s floppy, it doesn’t really work, but I thought the pictures were cute just the same!

Now on to Luke and his new toy. For those who don’t know, babies are supposed to do “tummy time” to help strengthen their neck muscles so they can lift their heads up. Luke’s been holding his up and looking around from early on (when you’re holding him, or if he’s lying on your chest), but he refuses to do so when on his tummy. Tim saw this tummy time mat at Walmart, and it’s great, but I think we have some work to do:

He’s also smiling, but unfortunately stops smiling when the camera comes out. Just the same, here’s the best two pictures we’ve got of his smiles so far.

stuff white people like

Thanks to Mac for this link. I have really enjoyed reading this blog on what white people like!

Being here in Ontario I often miss Vancouver – this blog has reminded me of quite a few white people on the left coast! My favourite posts are the ones on the NFL draft of friends (so that white people can feel the air of oppression on an afternoon) and the one on outdoor wear.

He slept!

Well he sort of slept. The last few nights, Luke’s been sleeping longer and longer stretches at night! I know it may not last, so we’re enjoying it while it does, but last night, he fed at midnight and then again at 5:20am! That’s a long stretch for a baby. I slept almost 4 hours uninterrupted! Then Tim was up with him this morning. What’s up with a baby who wants to play at 5am??

Here’s some more pictures of the little guy:

He likes to kick and punch a lot:

Baby stuff

Babies are very expensive. Nappies, wipes, creams, vitamin D, strollers, car seats, pumps, bottles etc etc etc etc etc. Who would have known that one so small could have so much stuff.

We went to babies r us today to buy a new stroller. The choice is frightening! There were rows of the things. Who would have known there was so much choice! It is finally good to get a stroller, at least now we can go for trips to the mall (I know the height of excitement) and get out of the house. Then if the snow ever goes, (does it ever leave Ontario?? – we have, what I can only describe as a snow mountain, outside the house) we can get out and about and discover what Ontario has to offer a young family! hmmmmmmm.

I think we are just about ready for the summer to come around. It is all going to be change in the spring. We have had an offer accepted on a house (in Georgetown – more about that in later posts). We hope to complete on 30th April – it will be good to have our own space again – well a space to fill with all that baby stuff we have bought! how can a 20 inch person have so much?!

Internet returns! (and so does our blog)

Well, the joys of satellite internet and power outages. Last Wednesday an electrician came out to fix our generator (due to a few power outages lately the generator seemed sick). Unfortunately, there seemed to have been a power surge that blew the modem. Thus, we were internet-less for a week! I don’t remember the last time I’ve had no internet for that long. I think it was the time I went to Vancouver for a few weeks Fall 2003. Other than that, I’ve been wired one way or another for forever.

Either way, we’re back online now. And with Luke starting to sleep better, there may even be time to post. (I always wondered – though wasn’t surprised – when new parents weren’t posting loads of new pictures of their babies in the early days – now I know that despite the fact that newborns sleep a lot – they don’t sleep at convenient times).

So now for some pictures!

Daddy’s finger versus …

Luke’s own thumb (the thumb sometimes wins, but it’s still little)

He’s so cute when he’s sleeping

This one’s from last night. I think the hat’s a bit big! And the dummy’s the size of his head – but he looks very cute just the same:

Today Luke and I went to a baby weight/breastfeeding support group. He didn’t like all the crying from the other babies. But he’s proud to say he’s putting on weight! He’s now up to 7 lbs 8 oz! That means that in 11 days he’s put on 9 ounces which seems pretty good!

I need to post a picture of Uncle Julian with Luke, but those pictures are on my mum’s computer, so I’ll do that in a bit.
